TWENTIETH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME First Reading: Isaiah 56:1, 6-7 The Lord wants all people to love and honor his name. He says that those who honor Him by obeying all of His laws will be "made joyful in My house of prayer." Second Reading: Romans 11:13-15, 29-32 Paul describes his hopes that his fellow Jews will follow the example of the Gentiles he has been preaching to. He claims that just as God has mercy for their disobedience, He wishes to show mercy to the Jews as well. Gospel: Matthew 15:21-28 A Canaanite woman begged Jesus to help her daughter, who was being plagued by a demon. Jesus at first refused her and said that "My mission is only to the lost sheep of the house of Israel." The woman was so persistent that Jesus said she had great faith and then He healed her daughter.
WEEKLY REFLECTION Today’s readings are about outsiders and insiders, "them" and "us." The question of who "belongs" among the ranks of God’s chosen people is a recurring theme throughout Scripture. It takes some interesting twists today. In the first reading, Isaiah challenges those who might like to claim salvation for Israel alone. "Foreigners" will also be acceptable to God if they follow the Law. God’s house is "a house of prayer for all people." The second reading leaves us in no doubt that salvation is for everyone—Jew and Gentile alike. Paul, the apostle to the Gentiles, assures us that God will have mercy on all. It is Jesus, in today’s Gospel reading, who surprises us at first. When a Gentile woman, a Canaanite, asks Him to heal her daughter, He answers rather harshly—he was only sent to the house of Israel; He can’t give children’s food to dogs! This faith-filled outsider speaks of her knowledge of the Creator—even dogs get some scraps. Surely there is love enough for everyone. ~ Margaret Bowman ~

STEWARDSHIP REFLECTION "Make known to me your ways, Lord; Teach me your path." (Psalm 25:4)Good Stewards seek guidance in living a way of life where sharing their time, talent and treasure becomes a basic pathway to what God has intended for then.
In the past few weeks we have experienced several problem areas in the body of the church. Some people are too warm. Others are too cold. We have tried to adjust the air conditioning system to compensate for this, and we apologize for any discomfort caused to anyone who comes to worship at Saint Isidore’s. It is impossible to accommodate everyone’s preference at the same time: some like the room warmer, others like it cooler. We try to keep the temperature about 70 degrees throughout the building. Nonetheless, some places in the church may still be too warm, such as the children’s room; other places may still be too cool, such as seats underneath the blowers, especially when they first come on. During the remainder of the air conditioning season, we recommend that you dress so that you are comfortable and can participate at Mass without distraction, or sit in a seat where the temperature is more comfortable. A special note for those who may be in the children’s room; we have had several complaints that this area is too warm, especially when the outside temperature is high. We have adjusted the system to alleviate this problem. However, if it is still not fixed, please let us know so that we may make further adjustments. If the space is too warm, please don’t hesitate to come into the body of the church to participate at Mass. Msgr. Burton
